The bow and arrow were introduced in Texas during this period
(around 700 AD), and it gave Late Prehistoric hunters a greater
edge. Bows and arrows are more accurate than the atlatl and
dart. Arrows were miniature versions of the darts used in
earlier times.
New tool forms also appeared. the bow drill was now used in fire
making and drilling objects.
Indian campsites over time collected lots of Indian trash. Such
piles or mounds are called "burned rock middens". These
middens tend to be round, or crescent-shaped. This is because
in the center is where the Indians cooked and/or heat treated
flint, and would discard burned limestone and flint, shell and
bone fragments, broken tools, and other garbage by throwing
it on the pile. Middens are very common throughout South
Texas.
